YOu should melt the sugar, remove the heat, then add the KNO3. It decreases the chance of accidental ignition.

[edit] Question

does epsom salts (magnesium sulphate)i think) and sugar mixed with a 1/3 sugar 2/3 salts melted down together. is this a good mix and does it work? as this are very easy to obbtain with out looking to suss.

You have no oxidizer in that mixture.

[edit] Updated method

I agree about melting the sugar on its own then adding the KNO3 and have also updated some text in the method.

i wouldnt realy do that, some times you can get whats called 'thermal shock'. If your carefull, you can melt both of them together

[edit] Mixing amount and style

My friend and I found that you can make these very easily in a pot. Keep it over a gas stove, keep mixing constantly and every so often remove it from the stove, and it cooks really nicely. We've made one as big as half a kilo (360 potassium nitrate, 240 sugar) and it came out just fine. Washes off really great too, we just put it under water for a while and everything came right off. ~Flare

ive made 2 kilos before, biggest waste of KNO3 ive ever seen, but damn did it smoke, the 4th of july was smokey in my neighborhood, and the best part is its so safe, and yes it is easy to clean.

haha and my little neighbor thinks it smells good too...

[edit] Where to buy?

Where should I buy the KNO3? I would like to know also where you can buy visco fuse. I've looked everywhere likely but I didn't find anything.

[edit] Ok I found where to buy the visco fuse

Ok I found where to buy the fuse [1] but I need the potassium nitrate.

[edit] Buy KNO3 online

In some towns you can find KNO3 in phamacies under the name "Salt Petter". You can also get KNO3 off of ebay.

It's also sold as a fertilizer, it's especially used on tomatoes. This is probably the cheapest source. --GalFisk 16:22, 16 June 2007 (EST)

[edit] Color smoke mix

I found a video tutorial on sugar/kno3 based smoke mix but it produce a color smoke by ading a powdered organic dye. Can someone tell me if this could be true. http://www.metacafe.com/watch/704958/ult

I contacted the producer Tuesday, still no answer. Normally sugar/saltpetre is too hot to be coloured, since the dye gets burned instead, but I guess it COULD be possible since he adds a whole spoon of baking soda, which reduces the temperature. But still, no proofs yet, besides that person made a video about binary explosive which wasn't really true. /Pudi

[edit] Question

Would it work if you mixed it in with mg crackers? (I.see.fish, Dah Pyro Nooblet)

Mg crackers? As in milligram crackers? or saltines? I don't see why you'd mix firecrackers in with smoke mix.

PS: The websites makes a signature for you, it's the second symbol from the right when your typing. It looks like someones signature in cursive.

replace the sugar to cytric acid in the smokemix and see much better result

[edit] wondering about a different composition....

how would a mix using KCLO3 compare to this? and i assume that the ratios would need to be altered? --Naektpov 05:28, 24 July 2009 (EST) my favorite smoke comp beside the sugar version is as follows its 16 parts sulfur/12 parts kno3 and 1 part charcoal its Weingarts smoke mix, I just use 16S/12kno3 and baking soda to taste.as a burn rate modifier.it should be packed but NOT rammed too tight .I think way back when Weigart made it the purity was way low so it burned slower .nowadays when made to his specs it burns too fast and about 5% baking soda is added and the charcoal can be left out entirely, this mix gives off tons of thick long lasting smoke comparable to the Mamoth smoke at the fireworkas stores.but is way cheaper and lasts longer than them too.I use a 1"x 6" thick walled tube and side fuse it at one end
